Elite, hobby or first time? Have no fear…

As the Southampton Sporterium coming to Southampton City Centre on the 20th of June! ReesLeisure, the organisers of  The Southampton Sporterium, have teamed up with Matt Webster, part of the elite UK team Nopinz Symec, who gives his support and encourages others to get on their bike and sign up.

Matt describes one of the events on the day, a Criterium, as a “fast-paced event, typically around a city centre and is an event which promises excitement, drama and a rush for both spectators and cyclists alike”. The event is open to everyone and will be a competitively fought race with a variety of categories throughout the day. Matt explained “You can enter as a team or go solo. Being the quickest on the day, conserving your energy, and knowing when to release that burst of energy is key to securing that win!”

The Criterium route itself will be just over 1.5 km and will be a circuit around East Park and Palmerston Park, with the first two events starting at 11am being non-competitive, giving primary school and secondary school children a chance to have a go and get on their bike. Then afterwards the competitive events start with the under 14 competition starting at Midday and the event ending just after 8pm with the Men’s Competitive Final. If you want to see cyclists going “over 30 miles per hour” as Matt described, then Southampton City Centre on the 20th of June is where you want to be.

The Sportive, happening on the same day as the Criterium, starts slightly earlier at 8am. A Sportive is an event that allows you to ride around a course that showcases beautiful views and nature. It’s a lot more relaxed than the Criterium and is there for riders who are just starting to get involved in the sport, or for those who want a more laid-back cycle. The Sportive offers two distances, 60km or 100km, allowing cyclists of all abilities to get involved.

Both routes will start in Southampton, then leaving Southampton, going through Fair Oak and Upham, there will be a split with the 100km sportive heading North towards Winchester, through New Alresford, across to Stockbridge finishing through Romsey then into Southampton, and the 60km veering left, coming back through Braishfield and Romsey before ending back in Southampton.

As a keen cyclist herself Nikki Rees, Managing Director of ReesLeisure, is feeling very optimistic and upbeat for the event “We are very enthusiastic about this event, as it is the first time hosting an event like this there is always that extra burst of excitement” with over 2,000 cyclists expected to attend there will certainly be a buzz in the city on the 20th of June!

You can join Matt in the Sporterium by signing up for a Competitive Criterium Race
